Marin Community Foundation Board

"The number of candidates vying for the "poor and needy" seat on the Marin Community
Foundation board has been culled to four. The opportunity drew 11 applicants, among
them incumbent Lois Meriweather Moore of Novato.

On Tuesday, the county supervisors, who make the appointment, decided to invite four to
come in for public interviews on Oct. 17.

Besides Moore, the finalists are: Aref Ahmadia, a San Rafael restaurateur and a member
of the county Human Rights Commission; Kerry Pe irson of Mill Valley, also a member of
the commission; and Deborah Wright of Marin City, a former Presbyterian minister who
has been involved in the nonprofit arena.

Rather than interviewing them all, the supervisors chose to follow the recommendations
generated by Marin Grassroots Leadership Network, which staged two forums for the
candidates and conducted straw polls afterward."

"IN GOVERNMENT, there is little more important that the public's confidence in honest
and accurate counting of votes. If Americans believe our system is inaccurate or if
political players can game the mechanics of ballot tabulation, faith in our Republic will
crumble. Marin is fortunate to have a track record of vote counting impartiality. Registrar
of Voters Elaine Ginnold's appointment of a citizens' committee to oversee the
implementation of new voting technologies continues in that tradition.
(...)
The Elections Advisory Committee is her first initiative. Initially suggested by the Board of
Supervisors, the committee will review all new technology and advocate steps to make
Marin's vote counting process even more transparent.

Ginnold picked a 20-member committee that's a model of political and geographical
balance. Some of the more prominent members include Community College Trustee
Greg Brockbank, San Rafael City Clerk Jeanne Leoncini, Green Party Assembly
candidate Cat Woods, Julie Grantz, chair of the Women's Commission, disability
advocate Patrick Connally, Shirley Graves the host of cable television's "Public
Advocate" program, former Marin Municipal Water District director Dick Hill, John Young
of the Grassroots Leadership Network, Tiburon's Dr. Don Linker, and Anne Layzer of the
League of Women Voters."
