Housing Elements Update
About the Housing Elements Update
We are currently working with grassroots groups and organizations in Marin to promote
community education and participation in the Housing Elements update processes.

What are Housing Elements?
The General Plan is a comprehensive policy document that defines the type, amount,
and location of future growth and development within a Town, City or County and forms
the basis for the jurisdiction’s planning activities and its decisions regarding
development proposals.

Every General Plan has many elements (organized in chapters) and one of them is
related to housing.  State of California’s Law requires all the local governments to plan
for housing to meet their fair share of existing need and estimated population growth.
This plan has to be updated every 5-7 years.

Why is this important this year?
In 2009, local governments in Marin County are working on updating their Housing
Element. This process is at a very important stage to advocate for Affordable Housing.
Contact your local government to find out when they will be reviewing their Housing
Element (and visit our blog frequently for updates).
